BOTOX Q & A

What is BOTOXⓇ?

Botox is an injectable medication used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. It’s also used to temporarily smooth wrinkles.

Botox is formulated from a neurotoxin called Clostridium botulinum, which is found naturally in forests, soil, and lakes. The botulinum toxin is only dangerous in high concentrations, the volume used in cosmetic and medical applications is minute, and perfectly safe.

How does Botox work?

Because Botox is created from a neurotoxin, it works by paralyzing the targeted muscles. To better understand how Botox works, it helps to think about how wrinkles form.

Just under your skin lies a network of nerves, muscles, and connective tissue that work together to enable you to speak, eat, laugh, blink, and create facial expressions. Every time those muscles move, they are also moving your skin.

When you’re young, a thick layer of collagen pads your skin. Over time your collagen layer breaks down and your skin becomes looser. Those muscle movements still occur, only now your skin gathers into lines and wrinkles.

Botox works by stopping muscle movement in precisely targeted areas of your face, which prevents your skin from pulling into folds and wrinkles.

How long do Botox appointments take?

During your initial appointment, you’ll discuss your medical history and treatment goals with Dr. Helen Rastamloo. The injections themselves take very little time, usually fewer than 10 minutes. There’s no downtime or recovery needed, so you can return to your day immediately after your appointment.

How long does Botox last?

You’ll begin to notice an improvement in facial wrinkles and folds within 2-4 days after your injections, and it can take a week or more for the full results to develop. You can expect those results to last from 4-6 months, depending on how your body responds to the injections.

The effects of Botox wear off gradually, and you’ll notice lines and folds slowly returning. That gives you plenty of time to decide if you want to extend the results with additional treatments. There’s evidence to suggest that men and women who have several Botox treatments experience longer lasting results than those who only try it once.
